Locations, facilities, and reservations questions

What if I can't find my city?

OpenUnit is currently only available in Toronto and Vancouver metro regions. Over the next couple of months we will be expanding to include facilities in cities across Canada.

To see the current cities, simply click the Change Cities filter at the top of the page.

How many storage units can I book in one transaction?

You can book 1 storage unit at a time with OpenUnit. The storage will be held under the primary customer name you give during booking. The primary customer must be present when checking into the facility. If you would like to have the additional units reserved, or if you have special request, please feel free to contact the OpenUnit customer support team for help.

Why can't I know the exact name of the facility or the location until after I book?

An OpenUnit Great Rate will be a price lower than you’ll find anywhere else. When brand-name storage facilities have units that would otherwise go unsold, OpenUnit helps to fill them. For us to negotiate these great deals for you, we can't give you the exact facility or street address until after you book. Once you book your unit, we immediately confirm your reservation and show you the facility's complete details, including its name and exact location.

To help you book the facility that's right for you, we clearly list the facility’s Star Rating as well as its customer ratings pulled directly from Google. We’ll find three facilities that best match what you are looking for and try to confirm price with one of those facilities. Should we not be able to place you in one of the three facilities presented, we will let you know and still secure pricing for you in the same area with a similar facility. Once you confirm your pricing, you’ll be able to see the city area where each facility is located, along with the confirmation number to finalize your rental with the facility.

Can I make a same-day reservation?

Of course you can! In order to check into a storage unit today, the booking should be completed during typical business hours (9am-5pm Mon-Fri), based on the local time of the city where you are interested in storage. Once your price is confirmed through OpenUnit, you must complete your reservation directly with the facility before you can occupy a unit.

How can I find a place to stay with specific amenities?

When you search for storage units, the search page will display the amenities typically offered by storage facilities and you can choose the types of amenities you would like at your facility. We’ll be sure to negotiate pricing on your behalf only from facilities that have the specific amenities you have requested.

Rates and pricing questions

What are OpenUnit Great Rates?

Great Rates are pricing deals that OpenUnit negotiates will facilities on your behalf. When searching for a storage unit, we’ll start by finding facilities closest to you that match your requirements. We’ll source pricing from three similar facilities and present you with the best price we were able to secure.

What is the OpenUnit Great Rate Fee?

The Great Rate Fee is a one-time charge paid to OpenUnit to secure the Great Rate we have negotiated with a facility on your behalf. At checkout, we will display the Great Rate we have secured from a facility, but we will not reveal for which facility until after you have completed your checkout and paid the Great Rate Fee. The Great Rate will be available and guaranteed for 1 hour after it is sent to you.

Are there any hidden charges, like taxes and fees, in your rates?

Our Great Rates are the monthly unit rate we negotiate on your behalf and are exclusive of taxes and/or other fees.

Each facility may also have its own charges - for example, a one-time account set up charge or monthly insurance fees. You will be required to pay any such fees directly to the storage facility usually at check-in time. Once you get your Great Rate through OpenUnit, we recommend that you contact the facility directly prior to moving in to inquire about any additional charges.

Ratings and reviews questions

What determines a facility's star rating?

A facility’s star rating is pulled directly from Google’s Places API and represents the most up-to-date and trusted user ratings and reviews for that facility.

Catering and Restaurant questions

What size storage unit do I need?

For most restaurants and catering companies, a 10' × 20' unit is the perfect size. It’s enough space to store patio furniture, holiday-themed décor, additional dining ware, extra inventory, and other necessary items for your restaurant.

Where can I store my catering or food truck?

If restaurants and catering companies need a place to store a catering truck or food truck, it should be able to fit in a 10' × 20' or 10' x 30' storage unit with the other supplies and inventory. Just be sure to place dishes, décor and supplies that are used more frequently toward the front of the unit, in case you don’t need the catering truck or food truck during quiet seasons. Then, you won’t have to rearrange everything just to grab something small when you’re in a hurry.

How can I store my restaurant equipment securely?

Most of our facilities have additional security features that can help protect expensive inventory, equipment, and supplies from potential thieves. Gated access, video surveillance, on-site management, well-lit property grounds, and individually-alarmed units are among the many great security features offered by storage facilities. Of course, not all of these will be available at every storage facility, but even having one of them protects your restaurant supplies from harm.

How can I share access with my co-workers?

When you arrive, the facility manager will check the lead guest's I.D and secure a copy of the documentation. At this time you can add on any additional co-workers or employees that you would like to have access to the storage unit.

Where can I get 24/7 access to storage?

Standard access hours aren’t going to cut it for most businesses using self storage. Self-storage facilities with extended access hours, such as 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., are widely available. 24-hour access is also an option at many of our locations. Be sure to ask the site manager for details on access hours.

Can I get things delivered for my business?

If you plan to use self storage to store inventory or materials, being able to have items delivered to the facility is a major convenience. Many locations offer this for businesses, saving you both time and effort.
